Robb Aaron Gordon – Liz Claiborne Now

Liz Claiborne’s “Now” fall campaign recently debuted. The clothes are modern but traditional with outfits that can go from work to play. Robb Aaron Gordon explored the streets and architecture of Dallas, Texas to capture the natural, relaxed looks of Liz Claiborne.

Says Art Director Juli Hart, “[Robb] has a great eye for composition. His lighting is painterly and brings the clothes alive while giving depth to the model. He has this fashion edge but the model’s attitude is very candid, loose, and happy, so you have these two elements working together to give it that special feeling.” Read more »

Disconnect from Desire: Abbey Drucker and School of Seven Bells

School of Seven Bells is making waves on the music scene with their new album “Disconnect from Desire.” Also known as simply SVIIB, the band consists of Benjamin Curtis and twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza. Formerly, Curtis was in the band Secret Machines and Alejandra and Claudia were in On-Air Library!. Their bands met while on tour in 2004 and by 2006 the School of Seven Bells was solidly formed. The band name was inspired by a legendary pickpocket academy in South America.

Bernstein & Andriulli welcomes Abbey Drucker, who recently collaborated with School of Seven Bells for a portrait series and short film. Both will be featured on Vmagazine.com.  Drucker prepared for the shoot by listening to SVIIB every day for several weeks. Says Drucker, “My main focus was to capture the lightness and beauty of Claudia and Alejandra’s vocals along with bands texture of instrument. I wanted to experiment the day of the shoot and feel the free form you absorb when you listen to the album.”

Julie Blackmon’s New Show “Line-Up” at Robert Mann Gallery

Julie Blackmon’s exhibit Line-Up is showing now at the Robert Mann Gallery in New York until October 23, 2010. Her photographs of children capture the unadulterated state of childhood in its mixture of stillness and chaos. As the oldest of nine children and mother of three, Blackmon doesn’t have to look very far for models or ideas. Photography is a family affair that involves her own children, siblings, nieces, and nephews.

Utilizing her own life as inspiration was not always the case. At one point in time, she nearly gave up her photographic pursuits for domestic harmony until a watershed moment occurred. Blackmon discovered a camera obscura in the cellar of her new house and began taking photographs again, with the picturesque suburb as her setting. Eight years later, she has won various awards and honors and her work is included in museums and collections around the nation.

The New Yorker describes her work as having “the high polish of vintage magazine illustrations and an appropriately colorful palette… its antic charm is hard to resist.” Many also note her references to Dutch Renaissance paintings with her vignettes of family life and carefully engineered compositions. Yet the images still retain a sense of spontaneity and the surreal sense of comic-timing that can only occur in reality. Be sure to visit the opening reception on September 23, 2010 from 6-8pm. Tom Corbett shoots Lee Jeans Campaign with Ogilvy Shanghai

Lee Jeans goes for the sultry rocker look this season across the Asia Pacific region with actor Ruan Jing Tian (Ethan Ruan) as their headlining model for China.   The technically intricate shoot had Ruan taking dare devil free jumps into giant mattresses, a fabricated subway set and weather engineers to make on-the-spot rain.
Through each setting, Corbett skillfully composed scenes of impulsive freedom. The lithe movements and gleeful cheek pictured in the models pay off Lee’s message of “Owning the Moment.”

Yuko Shimizu in “Blow Up” at the Society of Illustrators

Starting today through October 16th, 2010, the Society of Illustrators will exhibit “Blow Up” featuring Yuko Shimizu, Sam Weber, and Tomer Hanuka. Each artist comes from a distinct cultural background – Japan, Canada, and Israel, respectively. The show explores how their identities get “remixed” through meeting at an American crossroad.

Shimizu creates 3 new works specifically for the show (Blow Up No.0 and No.1 pictured above). She says, “I wanted to show my creative process. I normally create loose sketches first, blow up the sketch to the size I want to draw, cut the watercolor paper, very loosely trace the sketch onto the paper using light box, then spend long hours (sometimes days) drawing with a Japanese brush that is specifically designed to write sutra as part of Buddhist practice. I try to figure out the details of the images as I create to make the long drawing process interesting and refreshing.”

The finished drawing is then scanned and digitally colored. Color proofs are done to ensure consistency and to check details. Of the four works shown in the upstairs gallery, three are created specifically for the show.

Shimizu explains, “‘Blow Up No.0′ was an actual recent assignment where the AD gave me a lot of freedom so I was able to play around and experiment with coloring, composition and imagery itself. Using this image as a starting point, I decided to create new pieces that play around with the definition of word ‘blow up’: bubble, storm blowing and explosion.”

The opening reception is September 10th at 6:30pm at the Society of Illustrators on 128 E. 63rd st, New York, NY. Hope to see you there.

Jim Wright’s Covers and PDN Faces Award

Jim Wright has been busy this year. If you’ve walked by a newsstand, you’ve probably seen his work on multiple magazine covers. Wright shot Bruce Willis, Gerard Butler, and Brett Favre for three issues of Men’s Journal, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emma Thompson for Good Housekeeping, Claire Danes for Access, Hugh Grant, Chris Noth, and Sylvester Stallone for three issues of Cigar Aficionado, and Rachel Ray for multiple issues of Every Day with Rachel Ray.

It comes as no surprise that Wright is one of the winners of PDN Faces contest. His physically grueling shoot with Bruce Willis for Men’s Journal is one of the judge’s top picks. We asked Wright to comment on some of his memorable covers after the jump. Read more »
